Most of the trash cans I see have no tops, and even if they did, is leaving food on top of a trash can saying "Here's free food, eat it" or "Here's garbage, eat it"? I'd rather just hand it to the first actual homeless person I see. Sometimes its not just about passing along leftover food, but looking someone in the eye too.
I've been doing this forever, and fortunately in San Francisco the garbage cans do have tops. I've sometimes been frustrated looking for someone in need on my way home and ended up with unwanted leftovers in my refrigerator!
